Contemporary Art, Culture, and Resistance in West Papua
From October 26, 2025, to December 21, 2025
Special exhibition by the Department of Ethnology in the museum foyer
The ongoing conflict in West Papua (Indonesia) is one of the least noticed in the world. It manifests itself in various forms of oppression against the Papuans living there. They are exposed to violence and human rights violations as well as the destruction of their environment and culture.
Many Papuans are resisting and are also choosing artistic forms of expression to draw attention to their situation. The exhibition refers to music, performing arts, and even traditional cuisine. It conveys a holistic understanding of the rich cultural heritage of West Papua and the political and social challenges facing the people there.
The exhibition project was planned and realized by students from the Asia-Africa Institute at the University of Hamburg. In the Norishalle, the exhibition is supplemented with pieces from private collections and the NHG collection, as well as reproductions of pictures by various artists from West Papua.
