Geology

Without rocks we would know nothing about the history of the earth and life. At the same time this history is also the basis on which modern geosciences are trying to safeguard our future.

Exhibits in the Geology Department illuminate the changes in the landscape and climate in our region in the course of the earth’s history.

The formation of our Franconian Scarplandscape (Schichtstufenlandschaft) is depicted layer for layer.

The 8 m long Plateosaurus, one of the first large dinosaurs – a highlight of the museum. The first evidence of this species was found in the region around Nuremberg in 1834!

Minerals from all over the world – gemstones as well as building blocks of the earth.

Plateosaurus

The largest iron meteorite in Germany – a very special find!
